Users select boards, not simulators: voln-vp run --board virt-pi5. Each board is a directory boards/<name>/ with a simulator-neutral board.toml plus per-backend renders in subdirectories (for example boards/virt-pi5/renode/virt-pi5.repl). The spec treats the neutral manifest as the source of truth from which backend renders derive.
Schema read by the CLI
BoardManifest deserializes four fields. Other tables (such as [memory_map], [peripherals], [dtb]) are ignored by the CLI and serve as documentation of the board.
| Field | Type | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
name | string | Matched against --board |
memory | string | Memory size label, for example "1GB" |
default_backend | string | Backend used when --backend is omitted |
backends | array of strings | Backends allowed for this board |
Validation fails if default_backend is not in backends.
Boards on main
| Board | Memory | Default backend | Backends | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|---|
virt | 1GB | qemu | qemu | Generic QEMU virt smoke boot for AArch64, x86_64, RISC-V |
virt-pi5 | 8GB | renode | renode | Renode model of the Raspberry Pi 5 memory map for the embedded-rpi5 kernel |
A board must also be listed in the backend manifest’s boards array; both sides must agree before dispatch succeeds.
